Spencer: mis diez problemas en el debate del cambio climático

Bueno, tal vez no los diez mayores … sino los diez primeros que se me ocurren.

1. el término “cambio climático” mismo. Hace 30 años el término “cambio climático” hubiera significado el cambio climático natural, que es lo que los científicos climatólogos estudiaban entonces. Hoy se ha convertido en cambio climático inducido por el hombre. El público, y especialmente la prensa, piensa que “cambio climático” implica que NOSOTROS somos responsables de él. Pero fue la Madre Naturaleza, no Al Gore, quien inventó el cambio climático.

2. “Negacionista del cambio climático”. Primo hermano del primer problema. Otra vez, “negacionista del cambio climático” hubiera significado alguien que negara que el Óptimo Climático Medieval tuvo nunca lugar. O que la Pequeña Edad de Hielo no ocurrió. ¡Qué cosa más extravagante hubiera sido creer eso! Y ahora, a todos los que seguimos creyendo en el cambio climatico natural nos llaman “negacionistas del cambio cliático”. ARGHH.

3. la exigencia de investigación publicada y “peer-reviewed”. Podría escribir páginas y páginas sobre esto. Sí, es importante tener investigación científica publicada y “peer- reviewed”. Pero como se ha visto con los email del Climategate (y muchos científicos ya sabían), muchos escépticos del cambio climático inducido por el hombre tenemos “peers” (compañeros, revisores) por ahí que se han tomado como un deber el bloquear la publicación de nuestras investigaciones siempre que pueden. Sabemos que hay editores de revistas científicas que les ayudan enviando nuestros artículos a esos “porteros” con el propósito de que anulen el trabajo. Procuramos no protestar demasiado cuando ocurre, porque es muy difícil probar la motivación. Creo que está llegando el momento de exponer públicamente las pruebas del sesgo del “peer review”.

4. El argumento de autoridad. Es el útlimo refugio de los científicos del IPCC. Cuando los escépticos conseguimos publicar una investigación, alegan que el trabajo está desmentido por otro trabajo que  ha sido recomendado, ayudado en la búsqueda de financiación,  y seleccionado interesadamente por el IPCC para sostener su tesis. Esto es peligroso para el progreso de la ciencia. Si se asumiera que la opinión mayoritaria de los científicos está siempre en lo cierto. los mayores avances científicos no huebieran ocurrido jamás. El argumeto de autoridad es también una técnica estándar de la propaganda.

5. Escaquearse del debate. He dado conferencias a muchos grupos donde los organizadores no podían encontrar a nadie del lado del IPCC que presentara su lado de la historia. Me encantaría debatir con cualquiera de los expertos del IPCC sobre los asuntos centrales de la discusión entre “causa humana”  o “causa natural” del cambio climático, y las retroalimentaciones del sistema climático. Saben donde encontrarme. (Sobre la táctica más usada por el IPCC en un debate, ver problema #4.)

6. Falta de sentido común. Common sense can be misleading, of course. But when there is considerable uncertainty, sometimes it is helpful to go ahead and use a little anyway. Example: It is well known that the net effect of clouds is to cool the Earth in response to radiant heating by the sun. But when it comes to global warming, all climate models do just the opposite…change clouds in ways that amplify radiative warming. While this is theoretically possible, it is critical to future projections of global warming that the reasons why models do this be thoroughly understood. Don’t believe it just because group think within the climate modeling community has decided it should be so.

7. Uso de los modelos climáticos como realidad. Because there are not sufficient high-quality, globally-distributed, and long term observations of climate fluctuations to study and better understand the climate system with, computerized climate models are now regarded as truth. The modelers’ belief that climate models represent truth is evident from the language they use: climate models are not “tested” with real data, but instead “validated”. The implication is clear: if the data do not agree with the models, it must be the data’s fault.

8. Pretensión de que los modelos climáticos han sido testados.. A hallmark of a good theory is that it should predict something which, upon further investigation, turns out to be correct. To my knowledge, climate models have not yet forecasted anything of significance. And even if they did, models are ultimately being relied upon to forecast global warming (aka ‘climate change’). As far as I can tell, there is no good way to test them in this regard. And please don’t tell me they can now replicate the seasons quite well. Even the public could predict the seasons before there were climate models. Predicting future warming (or cooling) is slightly more difficult, but not by much: a flip a coin will be correct 50% of the time.

9. La aseveración de que el IPCC no tiene sesgo. The IPCC was formed for the explicit purpose of building the case for global warming being our fault, not for investigating the possibility that it is just part of a natural cycle in the climate system. Their accomplices in government have bought off the scientific community for the purpose of achieving specific policy goals.

10. La idea de que reducir las emisiones de CO2 es lo mejor que se puede hacer en cualquier caso. Oh, really? What if life on Earth (which requires CO2 for its existence) is actually benefiting from more CO2? Nature is always changing anyway…why must we always assume that every single change that humans cause is necessarily a bad thing? Even though virtually all Earth scientists believe this, too, it is not science, but religion. I’m all for religion…but not when it masquerades as science.
